Timothy C. Hennessy, 38, in 15 years, has become a driving force behind exponential growth and growing accolades at Concepts & Associates Inc. He started with the company after graduation and is now vice president and director of sales and marketing. Its client list has grown to include international and Fortune 500 companies, and sales place the company among the top 10 percent in the U.S., with himself personally in the top 7 percent. His community involvement includes a wide variety of sectors and service.
What was the most pivotal moment in your life? What happened and what direction did you take? Definitely when I became a dad. It completely changes your perspective on life and what’s important. Reality sets in now that you’re an influential role model for someone – your child. All of your actions matter. I now hold myself to a higher standard.
What accomplishment are you most proud of in your career? The Golden Pyramid, it is the most prestigious award in our industry for outstanding, creative use of promotional items in projects and successful programs, awarded by Promotional Products Association International. I’ve been fortunate to win it five times.
Have you had a strong mentor in your life? What did you learn from him/her? I get to work with my mentors every day. Did I mention they are also my parents and my best friends? One rule they have taught me, which applies in both business and in life. Do what you say your going to do. Your word is everything.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? I’ve been given this advice several times and in many different setting and ways by friends, scholars and parents… Ferris Bueller says it best though, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
What’s a lesson you learned from a mistake? Things may not always be as bad or good as they seem. They are usually somewhere in between. Everyone makes mistakes, it’s how you respond to them that makes you better. It’s also great to be successful but don’t get lazy and rest on your laurels.
What’s an interesting fact about you that not everyone knows? I love to travel. I have been to 6 continents and visited more than 20 countries.
What’s your ultimate career goal? I love what I do and believe that we get satisfaction and enjoyment out of helping our clients. My ultimate career goal is to continue to love my job & also grow Concepts into a bigger national footprint, while having fun along the way.
Where do you see yourself in five years? Continuing to help customers with their projects and events from providing creative ideas and excellent customer service through promotional products while having the best possible work environment for our employees & customer service for our clients.
Why did you choose to live in Birmingham and what keeps you here? I’m native to Birmingham and it is home. It has all the amenities you could ever want, without the feel of a big city. We have great restaurants and a growing city life. Above all, great friends and family live here too.
What’s one change you would make to improve Birmingham? Make more direct flights from Birmingham – Shuttlesworth International Airport to other big cities.
What is your favorite thing to do in Birmingham? Visitors to our city have told me that Birmingham is a well-kept secret and I have to agree. I love the day to day comings and goings around town. Specifically, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, going to church, visiting the zoo and golfing.
What do you think makes a good leader? Someone who leads by example, is trustworthy and understanding, and challenges those around them to reach their full potential.
What are steps young adults can take to be successful? Read more books that can help you gain a new skill or knowledge, and get exposed to different perspectives. Take a course that interests you or can make you better. You might surprise yourself and gain a new skill or get that promotion.
What’s your favorite attraction in metro Birmingham? The Birmingham Zoo
If you had to choose a different career, what would you pick and why? Professional golfer. I love to play golf as a game, but also love the competition aspect. It would be fun to play different golf courses and travel all over the world.
